We pulled through the customs office, and up the road a little further, and there it was…on the side of this beautiful mountain, the WELCOME TO ALASKA sign! We got out, and set up the camera. We even got the Vue in a picture with us, best member of the trip…the loyal transporter and our home. Great work Vue! We frolicked on the side of this mountain…in ALASKA. We rolled down the mountain like children. We did some yoga poses for Blythe. We soaked it up. Odometer 50,750ish. We had made it to Alaska. Time to play. We even saw some fresh animal bones… straight up rustic. We had another couple come take their picture, and they wished us good travels as they left. They must have found it humorous, me running and climbing ontop of the car to get a picture, all in 10 seconds.
And now, back on the road. And I use the term “ROAD” very very loosely. At least Canada had gravel… the US has DIRT. We took our sweet time, down the mountain on the dirt dirt road. There was even big divets… the poor Vue. Come on US, step up your game. We passed a “town”..or rather a gas station, but it was closed and all there was were little shanties and a giant hand giving us the finger. Not very friendly. But funny. And now we are heading to Chicken, Alaska. Named because the people couldn’t say it’s original name which was some kind of bird that looked like a chicken, Ptarmigan (yah, I couldn’t say that either) so the new explorers just called it Chicken. It supposedly has all sorts of fun Chicken things. Right on, right up my alley..roadside oddities. When the guy at the border asked us where we were headed for the night, and we replied “Chicken”, he asked if we were going to stay at the coop. Funny guy. Lindsay also would marry him and live in the border shanty on the top of the mountain. I don’t know if any of our family members would ever go visit her, like I said, no one would travel on the On Top of the World Highway. It now has begun to rain..dirt road, become mud road. At least we’ve kinda plained out…not climbing mountains anymore…so either were down the mountain or up in it. No idea. My ears have popped more on this trip than in all my life combined from all the altitude changes. And on through Alaska…woooooooo.
