Tuesday June 21st (Day 19) – (Part 2)– Them be some big ol’ trees

There was no chance of making it all the way to San Fran that day. We realized that when we arrived on the 101 on the Oregon Coast and it was already passed 6 pm. We had over 400 miles to go. We made a quick pit stop in Bandon, Oregon, a little seaside village. We took a slight detour to the beach. Must play in the Pacific a little. We found a path, and ventured onto the Oregon Dunes. The water was freezing and the ocean breeze took away the warmth of our 80 degree Oregon day.

We crossed the California State line and I decided to play a montage of California songs. California Girls and California Gurls. She’s So California. Hotel California. California. Dani California. Miss California. We had to pass through California Agriculture inspection, but they didn’t make us throw away our clementines. The 101 took us from the beach to the forest…. We drove until the trees towered over us and we saw the biggest trees we’d ever seen…hello Redwoods National Forest. There was some fog floating in that made the forest seems even more mysterious. We could’ve kept driving but since there was no chance of making it to San Fran, we decided to find a place to camp. We didn’t want to pass the Redwoods in the dark when we didn’t have a chance to bask in their glory. We found Mill Creek Campground, a state park campground with a very friendly host. She directed us to our little campsite, in the middle of the forest, next to this creek. We had still had the fresh pasta and red potatoes that we had bought at Pike’s Place Market in Seattle, so Lindsay put up the tent while I cooked our garlic linguine and red potatoes. The creek was full of very vocal frogs… it sounded like an orchestra of ribbits. It was ridiculous. We ate our very delish dinner, cooked on the Coleman, and crashed in the tent.
